Netflix : What I learned

Megan Jones covered perhaps one of the most influential and well-known platforms in the history of the internet: Netflix. I remember when Netflix first became a thing and you had to order your movies online and have them delivered. Now, I can turn on my TV and watch hundreds of different movies and shows, some even interactive, with just the push of a button.

The creators of Netflix, Mark Randolph and Reed Hastings, knew they wanted to start a business but did not have a set market to pursue. Miss Jones explains that the concept was birthed after Mr. Hastings owed $40 in late fees to Blockbuster. He believed there was a better way of watching movies without having to drive to the store to pick up and drop off DVDs. Ironically enough, after Netflix caught traction, the founders sought after a business deal with the CEO of Blockbuster, which was quickly shut down. The new platform crushed Blockbuster’s business and sales, eventually causing them to file for bankruptcy in 2010. Netflix now has an approximate net income of $2 billion.

After the huge success of the initial structure and concept of Netflix, the company began producing its own content in 2012. Since then, it has created monumental shows and movies including Stranger Things, Squid Game, Bridgerton, and Ozark. It has most certainly brought the world together, even in trying times like the COVID-19 pandemic, but it still has some negative impacts. Netflix works in a way that makes binge watching common, which has been associated with heart disease, weight gain, eye strain, and sleep deprivation. I know I’m guilty of wasting a whole day away because my show has roped me in. Even so, Netflix has been a wildly successful and impactful platform that changed the world of film forever.
